New house building statistics are 'encouraging'

New statistics show encouraging signs about the housing development
market in the UK, is has been claimed.
Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the Federation of
Master Builders (FMB), made this comment following the release of
new figures from the National House-Building Council (NHBC), which
showed that applications for new home builds are up by four per
cent.
However, he believes that although these are positive signs, people
should not consider this to be the end of the housing shortage and
estate agents may still witness a big demand for property.
Mr Berry said that "we need to get building back to where it was,
then raise it again to get it to keep pace with demand".
There is also a backlog of supply which has built up "over decades
of under-production", he continued.
The figures from the NHBC also showed that applications for new
homes in the private sector are up by 17 per cent when compared to
last year.
