Local building 'is more sustainable'
Sustainable methods of building properties, such as those that
utilise local people and products, are more viable than others,
according to the Federation of Master Builders.
Other forms of housing require that materials have to be
transported long distances and therefore are not as sustainable, an
official at the body remarked.
But flat-pack homes are able to be "innovative" and can offer
modern angles in terms of their design, director of external
affairs at the FMB Brian Berry noted.
Yet the firm's members employ people to operate in small circles,
something he claimed is a good move.
He commented: "That to me is much more sustainable, because they're
employing local people, not travelling huge distances, and where
possible using local building materials."
The use of local materials means that these methods are more
sustainable, he added.
Any new home built in the UK by 2016 should be zero-carbon, the
government revealed recently in a document about the
subject.
